Scope and Contents
This collection includes photocopies of photographs, published works, and newspaper articles. In addition to the research copies, there are several original documents from the Anchor Mountain Mining Company and the Golden Reward Mining Company. Materials from the September 9, 2022 accrual consists of materials related to Steven T. Mitchell’s time working for the Homestake Mining Company, research for his published book Nuggets to Neutrinos: The Homestake Story, and research for a new publication. It contains original documents related to Steven’s work, reports, articles, newspaper clippings, and copies of materials found in other Homestake Mining Company Collections at Deadwood History, Inc. and the Black Hills Mining Museum.

Biographical / Historical
Steven T. Mitchell was born and raised in the Black Hills of South Dakota. He attended the South Dakota School of Mines and Technolgy in Rapid City and received both a bachelor's and master of science degree in mining engineering. Mitchell worked for the Homestake Mining Company in Lead for many years, holding several engineering positions. After the closure of the Homestake Mine in 2001, Mitchell began work on his book, Nuggets to Neutrinos: The Homestake Story, which was published in 2009. Research for the book included consulting with former Homestake employees, the State of South Dakota Archives, Black Hills Mining Museum, and the Homestake Adams Research and Cultural Center.

Abstract
The Steven Mitchell Collection consists of materials collected by Mitchell as he worked on the water rights section of his book, Nuggets to Neutrinos: The Homestake Story. The collection contains original documents from the Golden Reward Mining Company, Anchor Mountain Mining Company, Jardine Mining Company, and many photocopies of photographs and documents from Homestake Mining Company. Copies of articles from newspapers as well as scholarly articles and thesis are also included in the collection. In 2022 additional materials were added that relate to Steven T. Mitchell’s time working for the Homestake Mining Company, research for his published book, Nuggets to Neutrinos: The Homestake Story, and research for a new publication.
Arrangement
The collection is arranged by topic. Documents originally housed in binders have been rehoused for preservation purposes but retain their original labels and order. The 2022 accrual starts in box 3 and is arranged in alphabetical order.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
The archival collection of Steven Mitchell was acquired by Deadwood History, Inc. by donation in 2015. More materials were added to the collection by Steven Mitchell on September 9, 2022.
Accruals
On September 9, 2022 Steven T. Mitchell brought several boxes of materials to add to the collection.
Some materials such as a reproduction newspaper of the Black Hills Pioneer Vol. 1, on June 8, 1876; The Lead Daily Call Jubilee Edition, August 5, 1926; the Lead Daily Call 75th Anniversary of the Homestake Mining Company, May 1953, a copy of the Yankton Press and Dakotan dated June 6, 1936 with an offical map of the Dakota Territory (sent to Steven T. Mitchell from the South Dakota State Archives); and a partial copy of an unidentified map were discarded.
One map that was part of the accrual is now 2021.001.038c as it is the original to the maps donated by Steven T. Mitchell in May, 2021.
Existence and Location of Originals
Many of the copies found in this collection are of photographs from the Evelyn Murdy Photo Collection and Fred Mosley Photo Collection, and the original photographs belong to the families. Original documents from the Homestake Mining Company should be available at the Homestake Adams Research and Cultural Center. Other original materials can be found at the Black Hills Mining Museum.
Processing Information
This collection was processed January 2020 by Hannah Marshall Bawden. On September 9, 2022, Steven T. Mitchell brought several more boxes of materials to be put into the collection. In October 2022, Tia Stenson-Cunningham added the new materials into the collection.
