Scope and Contents

This collection contains copies of theses pertaining to the landholdings or the mission of the Homestake Mining Company. A majority of the dissertations were submitted to the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, but the collection includes theses from a variety of colleges around the United States.

Conditions Governing Access

This collection is housed at the Homestake Adams Research and Cultural Center with no restrictions to access. The collection may be utilized during normal operating hours or by appointment.

Biographical / Historical

The Homestake Mining Company collected thesis papers that were related to the company's land holdings and mission. During the 1970s students often sent their thesis to the company in hopes of obtaining work after graduation. The Experimental Office of Homestake also ordered dissertations from various universities for the office's research library.

The Homestake Mining Company Thesis collection includes copies of several dozen theses either collected by or sent to various departments of the company. The dissertations date from 1920 through 1997.

The theses are arranged alphabetically by the author's surname.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

These materials were transferred as a portion of one donation from the Homestake Mining Company on May 26, 2005.

Existence and Location of Originals

Original drafts and copies of most thesis papers will be available from the university they were submitted to.
