This collection consists of individual annual reports for the Homestake Mining Company throughout its operation, 1878-2001. Additionally, there is supplemental information for certain years from 1990-2001. Barrik Gold Corporation annual reports can also be found in this collection.

Biographical / Historical

The Homestake Mining Claim was founded on April 9, 1876 by Fred and Moses Manuel and Hank Harney. They soon sold their interests to a group of men, led by George Hearst. Under Hearst’s direction, the Homestake Mining Company was incorporated in November 1877 and grew into the major economic driving force of the Black Hills area. As early as 1878, the management of the mine realized the necessity to document its financial growth and provide that information to its shareholders. Additionally, as the company grew into a mult-million dollar operation, the management used these reports to show the company's progress as well as incorporate plans for sustaining itself. The annual reports also reflect the mine's management and board of directors throughout its history.

Abstract

The Homestake Mining Company operated from 1877-2001. The annual reports were created by the accounting department in order to provide an overview of the financial earnings each year for the company's shareholders. In the earlier years, the reports include basic financial information and statements from the management. As the mine grew into a larger and more financially viable operation, the reports grew more detailed to reflect that change.

This collection is arranged chronologically by material type; individual reports and bound sets. Barrick Gold Corporation annual reports are found at the end of the collection.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

These materials were transferred as one donation from the Homestake Mining company on May 26, 2005.

Processing Information

This collection was processed in 2005 by Carolyn Weber and Virginia James. Finding aid completed from initial inventory in February 2014 by Jessica Michak. In January 2020, Hannah Marshall Bawden added additional materials to the collection with the assitance of Jim Petersen.
