About Deadwood History and its Collections

Deadwood History, Inc. (DHI) strives to make its collection of over 100,000 artifacts, archival materials, and photographs accessible to researchers.

The Homestake Adams Research and Cultural Center (HARCC) houses, preserves, and provides public access to one of the nation's largest collections of Black Hills archival materials. The HARCC serves as a repository for several significant collections, most prominently the Homestake Mining Company Collection. Several smaller collections pertinent to the history of the Black Hills include the Frawley Legal Collection, the Yuill/Sundstrom Collection, and the Masonic Lodge Collection.

For more information about our collections see our online catalog http://deadwood.pastperfectonline.com.

As the entirety of our collections are not available online, we recommend contacting the HARCC for a comprehensive search. More information about specific collections, materials, reproductions, or access can be acquired by contacting Tia@deadwoodhistory.com or by calling at 605-722-4800 or on our Research page.

Appointments for research are recommended, however, walk-in researchers are welcome.

The Research Room at the Homestake Adams Research and Cultural Center is open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m, Monday through Friday. Closed on holidays.

Using the Site

This site allows users to search across all of DHI’s finding aids. A finding aid is a description of a collection of archival materials. It is similar to the summary on the back of the book and the list of chapters. A finding aid provides information about the origin, history, content, date, format, and organization of the records. You can browse our collection by navigating the Collections tab (above). You can also use the Subject, Name, and Record Group tabs as additional access points.
