Biographical / Historical
The Homestake Mining Company was founded in 1877 in Lead, South Dakota, and operated until 2001. The primary focus of the company was gold mining, but, inevitably, Homestake expanded operations to include timber and coal. In the later 20th century, Homestake also undertook uranium explorations. As a large company that employed thousands, Homestake constructed several community-oriented facilities, including Homestake Hospital and Spearfish Canyon recreation areas. Purchase orders for equipment, parts, and materials to carry out and maintain operations were filled out by the head of each department. When the orders had been filled, the paper record was sent to the accounting or finance department. Purchase orders from 1915 through 1999 are available in this collection.

Abstract
Homestake Purchase Orders consists of orders from 1915 through 1999 and includes forms from several departments in Lead, the Wyodak Coal Company, the Deep Level Project, and uranium explorations in Wyoming. The records are largely duplicate or triplicate forms, but there is some correspondence.
Arrangement
Purchase orders have been maintained in original order. Chronologically and thereunder alphabetically by department or project. The changing names of departments, as well as the introduction of new technology, means that not every year has the same folders. Please see box list for more information. From 1975-1999 purchase orders are arranged by date only as there are so few forms.
