Biographical / Historical
The Homestake Mining Company was founded in 1877 in Lead, South Dakota, and operated until 2001. In the late 19th century, Homestake focused on its Black Hills operations but began expanding its operations in the early 20th century. This expansion required reports on different mining techniques, reviews of samples taken from the mine, and information on other mines throughout the world.
Reports were generated internally by Homestake employees and by external companies hired to carry out the work needed for specific projects. In addition, Homestake sent many of its employees to educational courses to ensure that they had the most up-to-date knowledge to write their reports.
